Migration is not a single checkbox. A vendor may accept uploaded video files without transferring comments, analytics, permissions, folders, links, or ownership history. Treat every migration note as a starting point for a pilot, not a guarantee.

Why teams look beyond Loom
Loom Starter is useful for a light trial, but its public limits are 25 videos per person and five minutes per screen recording. Business removes the video-count and recording-time limits at $18 per user per month. Business + AI is $24 per user per month and adds the broader AI editing and video-to-text package. A switch can also be about workflow rather than price. A team may need local production control, open-source hosting, screenshot annotation, a lower-cost editor, CRM engagement data, or an inbound request workflow. Write down the missing job before comparing feature lists.
1. Zight: visual communication in both directions
Zight combines screen and webcam recording with screenshots, GIFs, file sharing, and browser-based share links. The Share plan is free. Create adds unlimited uploads and recording time, five AI smart actions per month, and up to 10 Video Requests. Collaborate adds unlimited AI actions, custom branding, and up to 50 Video Requests. Check current Zight plans for the latest commercial terms.
The clearest difference for support, IT, product, and customer-facing teams is the request workflow. A Video Request lets a recipient record their screen from a link without creating a Zight account or installing the app. Request Links can collect other context such as screenshots, files, and diagnostics. That does not make Zight the automatic choice for every recorder buyer, but it changes the comparison when getting evidence back is part of the job.
Tradeoff: teams that only need highly produced local capture may prefer OBS, while sales teams that organize work around CRM engagement may prefer Vidyard. If an existing Loom library is part of the decision, use the Loom migration planning route and ask for the exact supported scope before promising a transfer.
2. Cap: open-source recording with share links
Cap is an open-source recorder with hosted sharing and a self-host option. The free tier is for personal use. Commercial desktop use is listed at $29 per year or $58 for a lifetime license, while Cap Pro is $12 per user per month or $8.16 per user per month when billed annually. Pro adds unlimited cloud sharing and storage, transcripts, AI-generated titles, summaries and chapters, custom domains, analytics, team workspaces, and the Loom importer.
Cap's current migration guide documents single-video imports, CSV imports of up to 500 mapped videos, and managed or controlled-batch migrations for larger libraries. It also identifies source-access and hierarchy limitations. That is more concrete than a generic upload claim, but it is not evidence that Loom comments, reactions, historical view counts, or old links will transfer. Test the videos and metadata your team actually needs.
3. OBS Studio: free local capture with full production control
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. It supports scenes, multiple sources, filters, audio mixing, and detailed encoding controls on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The tradeoff is the handoff. OBS creates local files rather than a hosted collaboration workspace and is built for recording and streaming rather than post-production editing. You will need a separate editor, host, permission model, and analytics layer if the job extends beyond capture. That makes OBS a strong production tool and a less direct replacement for Loom's record-to-link workflow.
4. ScreenPal: low-cost recording and editing
ScreenPal's free recorder supports screen and webcam recordings up to 15 minutes. Its public plan page lists Solo Deluxe at $4 per month when paid annually before promotions, with unlimited recording, a full video editor, audio editing, captions, stock media, and hosted publishing features.
ScreenPal fits people who spend more time polishing a recording than managing a team video library. Before switching, export a representative Loom video and check upload quality, captions, folders, privacy, and the final viewer experience. Public plan pages do not establish that Loom comments, analytics, or permissions will migrate.
5. Snagit: screenshots first, with short video capture
Snagit is TechSmith's capture and annotation product. It is well suited to step-by-step screenshots, callouts, blur, arrows, and quick visual documentation, with screen recording included for short demonstrations.
The current individual offer is an annual subscription, not the perpetual-license model described in older Snagit comparisons. TechSmith lists the individual subscription at $39 per year and states that Snagit subscriptions are billed annually rather than monthly. Snagit can share through TechSmith's Screencast service and other destinations, but buyers should compare that workflow directly with Loom's hosted libraries, comments, and viewer analytics.
6. Vidyard: sales video and buyer engagement
Vidyard is positioned around prospecting, buyer engagement, and CRM-connected revenue workflows. Its current free plan allows five recorded videos per month, with new recordings up to 30 minutes. Starter has a self-serve purchase path, while Teams and Enterprise use custom pricing; confirm the current Starter total in Vidyard's live checkout rather than relying on an older fixed-price comparison.
That focus is useful when video is tied to pipeline activity. It can be unnecessary overhead for internal walkthroughs or support replies. Run a real sales sequence before buying: record, personalize, send, confirm tracking, and verify that the CRM activity lands where the team expects it.
How to switch without inventing a migration promise
Loom documents individual MP4 downloads for eligible paid workspace roles. Availability depends on the plan, role, workspace settings, video type, and file size, and some Loom features are not included in the downloaded MP4. Read the current download guidance, then confirm team-library export options directly with Loom before setting a migration schedule.
A safe migration plan separates files from workspace behavior. Video files may move while links, comments, reactions, folders, permissions, analytics, transcripts, captions, and ownership history do not. Ask each shortlisted vendor to confirm those fields in writing.
- Inventory active creators, important libraries, public links, owners, and retention requirements.
- Export a small, representative set from Loom before attempting the full library.
- Import or upload that sample to the new tool and compare playback, captions, privacy, organization, and download behavior.
- Create a redirect or communication plan for old links; do not assume their URLs can be preserved.
- Run the recording, editing, sharing, and viewer workflow with real users on desktop and mobile.
- Only then schedule the wider move, with an owner for exceptions and a rollback window.
