It’s one thing when it’s a news headline. It’s another thing when it’s family. Ever since the first news of the invasion of Ukraine, I’ve been following the day to day of the conflict.
Like the rest of the world, I was on the edge of my seat from the get go. Now, as time has passed, and other headlines have taken attention, I’m still on the edge of my seat–because I have family there.
Growing up, I spent my summers in Ukraine, in a city called Kharkiv. Kharkiv is located in the northeast part of Ukraine, with a population now of about 1.5 million. It’s a major cultural center, with museums, theaters, libraries and beautiful cathedrals.
My mother was born in Kharkiv and moved to Russia when she was young. I was born in Moscow. But every summer, she would take me back to spend time with my cousins, great grandparents–her entire side of the family.
We would gather together in the Kharkiv’s suburbs where my great-grandparents had a small farm. I remember the basement was always filled with canned fruits and vegetables. That farm is where I developed my love for Russian cuisine, spending each day eating canned tomatoes, varenniki & pirogis.
My great-grandfather had a love for dogs he passed onto me during those summers. I had a favorite, named Chipa, and we would go for long walks around the town. I also spent a lot of time with my aunt, uncle and two cousins who lived in the city center, right by the train station. I would eat a ton of Ukrainian food and play football (soccer) outside in the square.
Coming from busy and bustling Moscow, the pace was slower. I enjoyed every minute.
And so the Ukraine situation is still top of mind for me. As Head of Sales at Zight (formerly CloudApp), I want to extend a personal invitation to any Ukrainian–as an entire organization, we want to help.
When you’re living through a war, communication is a necessity. Zight (formerly CloudApp) or asynchronous video can be recorded whenever and wherever you need and sent to anyone, in any country.
The visual communication–that video time–can help you feel close to loved ones, even if they’re far away. And it can keep the real priorities of life moving–school, education, work.
